  • Piazza San Marco represents the very heart of Venice, where to be amazed by different historical architectonical monuments like the Basilica, named after San Marco as well, or the Renaissance buildings along the long sides of the square. But there is something more: did you know that walking in Piazza San Marco actually means to be walking the only square of Venice? The square is always beautiful, also when it is flooded by the water of the lagoon: an unusual and impressive experience for locals and tourists.
  • This marble beauty known the world over was quite an architectural undertaking in its day. It has become a beloved Venetian landmark, worth every penny it cost to build. Its magnificent reflection glistens in the water below, making for a stunning photograph. We stop at Marco Polo’s home to learn of this son of Venice who regaled his people with tales of another world, the Far East. And, when in Venice, what better thing to do than people-watch in a local campo (square)? Marvel at spectacular structures and observe the locals in their daily routines.
  • The floating city of Venice is surprisingly not just one island. It is made up of 118 islands that are connected by over 400 bridges! The most characteristic aspects of the city are the beautiful canals that run through every corner of the city as if streets. The largest and most important of all is the Grand Canal that runs through Venice dividing it into two, lined with great palaces.
  • The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. It is typically propelled by a gondolier, who uses a rowing oar, which is not fastened to the hull, in a sculling manner and also acts as the rudder. The uniqueness of the gondola includes it being asymmetrical along the length making the single-oar propulsion more efficient.

Tour description

This is the tour for those that come to Venice for the first time: we will talk about the winged lion, the story of St Mark being brought to Venice from Egypt, his “golden church”, and then Theodore, killing a dragon, and, of course, when, how and why the Venetians have built a city on hundreds of thousands of wooden poles stuck in the mud of the lagoon.

We will visit St Mark’s Square, the basilica and we will end at the Rialto bridge on the Grand Canal.

Walking across the city --you can choose between the Castello or San Marco districts-- we will also see some of the hidden corners in Venice, understanding everyday life in the city, its problems, what is like to live in such a city, and about the “high water” phenomenon and what is on to protect the city and the lagoon.

Enjoy a 30-minute Gondola ride to end with an unforgettable experience.
