A series of tunnels below ground level that hold the not so known waterworks of the Trevi fountain. One of Ancient Romes first Aqueducts still can be seen here as it is still in use to this day.
Tour description
Explore a hidden layer of Rome on this private underground experience that reveals what lies beneath two of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Guided by an Official Private Guide and with all entrance fees included, this tour offers a revealing look at how ancient Rome continues to exist beneath today’s streets.
The experience opens beneath Piazza Navona, a Baroque masterpiece that conceals a far older structure below. Descending underground, you enter the remains of the Stadium of Domitian, constructed in the 1st century AD for athletic contests and public events. Walking through preserved corridors and architectural remains, you clearly see how the shape of the ancient stadium dictated the form of the square above, creating a direct connection between imperial Rome and the modern city.
Leaving Piazza Navona, the walk continues through the historic center toward the Trevi Fountain. After stopping to admire its dramatic façade and hear the story behind its symbolism, you step below street level once again. Here, the visit continues inside the Vicus Caprarius, often called the City of Water. This underground complex reveals ancient residential structures, passageways, and a segment of a Roman aqueduct that still carries water today, feeding the fountain above.
Throughout the tour, your guide explains how Rome developed vertically rather than replacing its past, allowing ancient infrastructure to survive beneath later construction. Moving through these quiet underground spaces offers a striking contrast to the busy streets above and a clearer understanding of Rome’s layered history.
This private underground tour is ideal for travelers who enjoy archaeology, hidden sites, and a deeper understanding of Rome beyond its surface, revealing how the ancient city continues to support and shape the modern one.
