Rome: Old Paintings Restoration Hands-on Workshop

Give your child the opportunity to experience art from the inside with this creative and educational workshop designed specifically for young minds. This 90-minute hands-on activity introduces children to the world of painting and restoration through play, experimentation, and discovery.

Under the guidance of professional restorers, kids learn how artists in the past created their own materials, long before ready-made paints existed. Using natural pigments, linseed oil, and egg yolk, they prepare both egg tempera and oil paints, following the same methods used by masters such as Michelangelo and Caravaggio. The process is explained in a clear and engaging way, turning historical techniques into an exciting practical experience.

Once the colors are ready, children put their creativity into action by painting on a special canvas with the pigments they’ve made themselves. Along the way, they discover how art restoration works and why preserving paintings is so important, gaining a basic understanding of how artworks survive through centuries.

At the end of the workshop, each child takes home their own decorated canvas, a personal keepsake that captures both creativity and learning. This experience is ideal for curious children who enjoy drawing, painting, and hands-on activities, offering a playful introduction to art, history, and craftsmanship in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.
