Porta Pia is located within the Ancient 271-275 AD Aurelian walls. A famous gate of Rome that replaced the original gate which was in place when the walls surrounding it were erected. Porta Pia was designed by no other than the great Michelangelo in 1561.
-
The Basilica is built within the ruins of the Roman Baths of Diocletian. The Ancient Roman Spa dates back to 306 AD and were the largest of imperial baths. The Basilica was constructed in the 16th century, following an original design by no other than Michelangelo but is largely a Baroque style Basilica due to other architects taking the lead in the design and style over the centuries.
-
Located not so far from the Colosseum, the small Basilica is home to the infamous statue of Moses. Pope Julius the second, who commissioned the project to be Hand crafted in 1545 for his personal tomb, ironically died while Michelangelo was still in the carving process. The original building from 432 was designed to house the relic that so famously bounded Saint Peter while he was imprisoned in Jerusalem.

One of the most famous squares of Rome is Piazza del Campidoglio, situated in front of the Palazzo Senatorio, the city hall of Rome! The square, originally designed by Michelangelo, is embellished with the copy of the only Roman bronze equestrian statue which survived from the ancient Roman time. Walking here means to get in touch with the old origins of the Eternal City!
-
A church with a simple facade, but this basilica will surprise you with the beauties that are inside! You'll discover a chapel with gorgeous frescos from the Renaissance Age, important Catholic relics related to a saint and even tombs of the Medici Popes. This simple looking church from the outside is also home of a marvellous masterpiece, a marble Jesus sculpted by Michelangelo himself!
-
Piazza Farnese has been embellished with the great Farnese palace since Renaissance times. Michelangelo was one of the architects who joined the project. If you come here you can understand how long is the history of Rome: a typical square of the city centre, next to Campo de Fiori where the local and traditional market could be found, that is embellished with a Renaissance palace and two enormous Roman fountains, originally located in the Caracalla’s Baths. Amazing.
Tour description
Walking in Michelangelo’s Rome means entering the mind of a restless genius, an artist who expressed himself through stone, space, and form with an intensity that still defines the city today. This private walking tour is dedicated to his Roman legacy, tracing the places where his vision, ambition, and inner conflicts took physical shape.
Your experience begins with a comfortable hotel pick-up, allowing the day to unfold smoothly as you reach the first stop of the itinerary. From the outset, the focus is not on famous highlights alone, but on understanding Michelangelo as a man, an artist who saw himself first and foremost as a sculptor, even when painting or designing architecture.
The walk opens at Porta Pia, one of Michelangelo’s final architectural works. Here, your guide explains how his late style broke classical rules, favoring tension, asymmetry, and expressive force. From there, you continue to Santa Maria degli Angeli, where Michelangelo transformed the massive remains of the Baths of Diocletian into a church of monumental clarity. The contrast between ancient Roman structure and Renaissance vision reveals his extraordinary ability to dialogue with the past.
Following Rome’s historic streets, the tour reaches San Pietro in Vincoli, home to the imposing Moses. Standing before the sculpture, you explore its symbolism, physical power, and the unfinished project of Pope Julius II’s tomb, one of the most complex and tormented episodes of Michelangelo’s career.
The journey continues uphill to Piazza del Campidoglio, entirely redesigned by Michelangelo as a political and symbolic space rather than a simple square. Your guide illustrates how architecture, urban planning, and power merge in this project, reflecting Renaissance Rome’s transformation.
The final artistic stop is Santa Maria sopra Minerva, where you encounter the Cristo della Minerva, a rare example of Michelangelo’s mature religious sculpture. The figure’s physical realism and spiritual tension offer a deeply human interpretation of faith.
The tour concludes in Piazza Farnese, dominated by the Farnese Palace, a masterpiece completed following Michelangelo’s design. Here, the narrative comes full circle, connecting sculpture, architecture, and personal struggle into a single artistic legacy.
This private experience is ideal for travelers who want more than a checklist of works. It offers a coherent, human portrait of Michelangelo, told through the streets and monuments of Rome where his genius still speaks with extraordinary force.
