Sites you’ll visit

  • Fontana del Tritone
  • Trevi Fountain
  • Vicus Caprarius
  • Via del Tritone
  • A 17th Century fountain within Piazza Barberini, easily accessed from the grand Via Veneto. The fountains sculpture was carved by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the best artists of Baroque history and includes his family crest of the bee in a clear, central position.
  • The backdrop to many classic films such as "Roman Holiday" and "La Dolce Vita" the fountain is the biggest of its kind in Rome. Work on the fountain started in 1732 after the Popes competition during the Baroque era to build something as beautiful as the Spanish Steps. The creator of the world famous fountain actually didn't win the contest but due to the outcry in Rome over a Florentine having won, Nicola Salvi was given the go ahead!
  • A series of tunnels below ground level that hold the not so known waterworks of the Trevi fountain. One of Ancient Romes first Aqueducts still can be seen here as it is still in use to this day.
  • A relatively modern street for the eternal city, built during the 19th century to link Rome's famous shopping street of Via Del Corso and Piazza Barberini and is often used to reach the Trevi fountain.

Tour description

The entire Roman Empire thrived from their water access and gained immense power throughout the land due to their transportation systems. Although Aqueducts existed before Roman times, they were categorically improved and perfected during the years of the Empire in result of their mastermind engineering of the city’s waterworks, ultimately making the success of the city by giving autonomy in suppling water and providing sanitary aid for public health.

The Trevi Fountain Underground Tour will allow you to appreciate how important the Aqueduct structures were for Rome but also still continue to be. You’ll get to admire the Magnificent Trevi Fountain as well as Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s very first free-standing fountain in Rome, something he became a master of.

Although there were hundreds of Aqueducts throughout the vast empire, Rome itself had only 11. The most impressive of all is the “Aqua Virgo” as it is the sole supplier for the large mass of water needed to power the Trevi fountain. During the Trevi Fountain Underground Tour you’ll enter a real once in a lifetime place that is hidden below the world famous fountain and be able to see part of this underground Aqueduct within the Vicus Caprarius archaeological Museum.

Our adventure will end with a visit to the Virgin Aqueduct archeological site, still preserved below the building of the “Rinascente” commercial center in Via del Tritone.

The fountains are enough to justify a trip to Rome
