Sites you’ll visit

  • Villa Torlonia
  • Casino Nobile
  • Casina delle Civette
  • Quartiere Coppedè
  • This very unique Villa can be found along the outskirts of central Rome. First established in the 1800's, it was once home to a famous banker who, in 1920 rented the location to Benito Mussolini for only the equivalent of €0.16 per year and was used as the State Residence throughout the Second World War.
  • When visiting the Casino Nobile inside Villa Torlonia you will experience the aristocratic vibe bequeated by the noble Torlonia family. It was built at the beginning of the XIX century in an Ancient roman style adorned by columns and plaster reliefs, along with original Roman pieces. The awesome rooms, with chandeliers and colorful paintings from the XIX century are a magnificent evidency of the family heritage.
  • In the fabulous Torlonia park, owned by the last Roman noble family, there is the small and atypical home, that looks just like out of a fairy tale. It’s a true gem of Art Noveau where decorations and art melt perfectly in a dreamy athmosfere. Named after the many owls created with colorful stained glass windows, it is a true encyclopedia of arts and crafts masterpieces, and recalls the last time in modern era when beauty was at one’s fingertips in everydays life.
  • Quartiere Coppedè is truly a unique place and very unlike the rest of Rome. Elegant and well decorated small buildings, mixed with open spaces and narrow roads, a neighborhood that will impress you.

Tour description

After a short taxi ride from the city center, you will arrive at Villa Torlonia accompanied by an expert and entertaining guide that will lead you through this stunning neoclassical complex. Small lakes, exotic plants, columns, obelisks, a tournament area, a medieval village and the Casina delle Civette which plays host to a stained glass museum are part of this wide itinerary.

During the twenty years of fascism, Villa Torlonia was the private residence of Benito Mussolini and his family and it was used for both political meetings as well as a place where it was possible to practice sports such as tennis and riding thanks to the inclusion of a beautiful jumping area. It also hosts an air-raid bunker located in the basement of the villa which was built to protect guests from raids. Villa Torlonia was turned into a public park at the end of the 1970s. During the Rome’s Art Nouveau Tour, you will visit the so-called Casina delle Civette (the Little House of the Owls)- the residence of Prince Giovanni Torlonia until his death in the 1930s. Today this ‘little’ house is a museum with 20 rooms full of paintings, mosaics, colorful stained glass windows and porches decorated with maiolica. Also, you will visit the Casino Nobile, renovated by the architect Giuseppe Valadier, decorated with stunning paintings and stuccoes, which houses an impressive collection of sculptures. End with a stroll through the remarkable Coppedè quarter, an Art Nouveau gem in the heart of Rome designed by the architect Gino Coppedè. See the symbol of this neighbourhood, the lovely Fountain of the Frogs in the famous Piazza Mincio.
