Sites you’ll visit

  • San Paolo fuori le Mura
  • Abbazia delle Tre Fontane
  • Carcer Tullianum
  • The Basilica of Saint Paul outside the Walls testifies the history of the Holy Church in Rome. The main altar, surmounted by a stunning Gothic canopy, treasures the mortal remains of St Paul, who was buried here. The giant basilica was built as early as the V century AD and features original Roman columns, a great mosaic from the Middle Age, but also the portraits of all the Popes in history, including the last ones: Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI.
  • Three Fountains Abbey. According to Catholic tradition, it was raised on the spot where St. Paul was beheaded by order of Emperor Nero in 67 A.C. When severed from Paul's body, his head bounced and struck the ground in three different spots, from which 3 holy fountains sprang up. They still flow today and are located in a sanctuary celebrating the life and death of the Holy Apostle.
  • The Carcere Mamertino is the place where, according to tradition, St Peter and St Paul were imprisoned for almost nine months before being executed. It is located in the basement of a Baroque Church, very close to the Roman Forum and just behind the stunning Arch of Septimus Severus. During your visit to this cave, dug inside the Capitoline hill, you will breathe the devotional and evocative atmosphere of a truly holy site, which is also considered the most ancient jail of the world.

Tour description

Saint Paul, the Apostle, original name Saul of Tarsus, was one of the leaders of the first generation of Christians, often considered to be the second most important person in the history of Christianity. His surviving letters have had enormous influence on subsequent Christianity and secure his place as one of the greatest religious leaders of all time.

Accompanied by an expert guide you will visit the places connected to St. Paul’s life. Start your tour at the Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura, a church filled with a sacred atmosphere that houses his shrine.

St. Paul came to Rome in 61 AD when the Roman court sentenced him to death for professing his faith. During this tour you will visit the place where this sentence was carried out and the site of his martyrdom - the "palude Salvia" - at the Abbazia delle Tre Fontane, today a quiet and peaceful monastery in the heart of Rome.

The last stop of your tour will be the Carcere Mamertino, the oldest prison in Rome, where the Apostles St. Paul and St. Peter were imprisoned for 9 months and where, according to legend, they miraculously made water appear in order to baptize the guards.
