A picture with the Spanish Steps in the background is a must do in Rome! This modern monument was arranged three centuries ago in order to find an architectural connection between the Fountain of the Barcaccia on the street level, by Pietro Bernini, and the Renaissance church standing on the top of the slope. The Spanish Steps are unique for their unusual plan and shape designed by Alessandro Specchi and Francesco De Sanctis. Traditional icon of the Italian Dolce Vita, the Spanish Steps cannot be missed during a visit to the Eternal city.
-
This site on the hill of the Spanish Steps is under the tutelage of the French Embassy to the Holy See. This imposing construction once provided a link between a part of the city that was, to a considerable extent, occupied predominantly by the French and the area below, occupied instead by a colony of Spaniards. More importantly, the steps provided an architectural space where people could meet up and relax amid pleasant surroundings. After a year of restoration work financed by luxury jeweller Bulgari, one of the most iconic and beloved places in Rome has returned to its original splendor.
-
Located on top of the Spanish Steps, Villa Medici has been the official French Academy in Rome since 1803 when Napoleon transformed it from the Dukes Palace. It was originally built for the Medici family's summer residence as it offers a beautiful view and strategic position. The Villa was one of the first buildings in Rome dedicated to the Medici family.
Tour description
Cardinal Ferdinando De’ Medici, a great art collector, bought the villa in 1576 and commissioned the architect Bartolomeo Ammannati to build a palace worthy of the glorious De’ Medici family. The Villa, organized as a museum, features the Cardinal’s personal collection of artwork. Start this exclusive visit with your private guide: marvel at the facade, adorned by beautiful bas-reliefs, and be stunned by masterpieces inside by many great artists. In 1801 Napoleon bought the building, and in 1803 the Villa Medici became the headquarters of the French Academy in Rome. Take your time to explore the garden that, with its decorations of ancient statues and reliefs, represents a beautiful example of the Italian renaissance style, and offers a superb view of St Peter's Basilica. End your tour with an amazing view of the city. Marvel at the beautiful Spanish Steps and enjoy a nice walk in the historic center of the Eternal City
