The Catacombs of Rome are comprised of 40 separate underground areas spread through a large vicinity across the area of Rome. To the surprise of many people, the catacombs were not only used for the Christian religion but for all residents during Ancient times going back to Etruscan times. During the Roman imperial time, it became "fashionable" to follow the earlier Etruscan traditions and bury the dead rather than continue with creminations of earlier Roman people. The Christian catacombs are an extremely important area in terms for art history as they contain paintings from 400 AD.
-
This small Basilica of Rome located behind the Colosseum uniquely has 2 underground levels, the lowest dating back to the Republican era of 509-27BC and the middle level is believed to be from 392. The Basilica dedicated to Pope Clement first is a real history filled gem of modern day Rome.
Tour description
Visit this maze of quarries and tunnels that are ancient underground cemeteries that also provided refuge to the Christian communities during the Roman persecution. Today, the Catacombs represent priceless evidence of the ancient world, where it is possible to admire significant archeological findings. The quiet tunnels will come to life as your guide tells you the stories and legends of early Christianity during the days of Roman persecution. Stepping into this mystical maze you will see some of the most important Christian frescoes in the world, such as the earliest depiction of the Virgin Mary and the oldest image of the Three Wise Men. Continue your tour in the Basilica of San Clemente, the Catholic church dedicated to Pope Clemente I. Wander through the different layers of history with frescoes, mosaics, and an underground temple dedicated to the God Mitra.
