The San Lorenzo area in Florence is a significant historical and cultural hub closely tied to the Medici family. Anchored by the Basilica of San Lorenzo, one of Florence’s oldest churches, this district served as the Medici’s spiritual home and final resting place. The basilica, designed by Brunelleschi, features stunning Renaissance architecture and the Medici Chapels, which house the tombs of prominent family members. The area around San Lorenzo also includes bustling markets and vibrant streets, reflecting both the local life of Florence and the legacy of the Medici’s influence on the city’s development.
-
Palazzo Medici Riccardi is a stunning Renaissance palace in Florence, originally commissioned by Cosimo de’ Medici in the 15th century as the Medici family’s primary residence. Designed by architect Michelozzo, the palace features an elegant, symmetrical façade that exemplifies Renaissance ideals of balance and proportion. Inside, visitors can admire the breathtaking Magi Chapel, adorned with vibrant frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli that depict the procession of the Three Kings—an homage to the Medici’s wealth and influence. Palazzo Medici Riccardi stands as an enduring symbol of Medici power, blending art, politics, and architecture in a way that helped shape Florence’s identity.
-
Explore the essence of Florence through its iconic symbol, the awe-inspiring Duomo, officially named Santa Maria del Fiore. Crafted by the legendary Arnolfo di Cambio six centuries ago, it stands as the third largest cathedral globally. The exterior hues and facade intricately reflect Florence's local traditions, subtly intertwining with the medieval rivalry against Siena. Opting for a guided tour unveils the rich history embedded in every facet of the facade.
-
Palazzo Vecchio is Florence’s iconic town hall and a powerful symbol of the city’s political history. Built in the 13th century, this fortress-like palace served as the center of Florentine government and later became a Medici residence. Its imposing façade, crowned by a tall clock tower, overlooks Piazza della Signoria, setting the stage for political life and public events throughout Florence’s history. Inside, the grand Hall of the Five Hundred boasts magnificent frescoes by Vasari that celebrate the city’s victories and the Medici’s influence. Palazzo Vecchio remains a testament to Florence’s civic pride and Renaissance splendor.
-
Pitti Palace is located on the South side of Florence close to the Ponte Vecchio. The building was erected mid 1500's during the Renaissance age and has been in many hands since the Medici Family lost power of Italy. A notable name that took control of the Palace was Napoleon, who used it as a power base during the 18th century. When Italy finally united as the county we know today, Palazzo Pitti was used as the main Royal Palace, so you can imagine how much history and historic movements are within these walls, not just the artwork and masterpieces that are on display within its impressive 32,000 square metres of galleries.
