Sites you’ll visit

  • Centrale Montemartini
  • Macro Future Museum
  • Testaccio
  • Can an archeological museum of Ancient Roman art be arranged inside a very modern power plant from the last century? The Centrale Montemartini does! Finely designed rooms house fantastic original Roman pieces such as marble statues, busts and coffins right close to huge diesel motors of the ex power plant. The link in between those two contrasting worlds, unusual and competing, marks the continuous evolution of the Eternal city.
  • The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome is actually split between two sites and consists of more underground, obscure pieces rather than the architecture of the building. In comparison to the famous MAXXI museum which is a recent build by an award winning architect, the MACRO museums are based in older buildings that were both a brewery and even a slaughterhouse.
  • A place of Rome not on the tourist map but with plenty to keep you interested. The artificial hill of Testaccio is actually made of discarded clay pots from ancient Roman fishermen. The area is also home to a monument commonly associated to Egypt, a pyramid! built between roughly 18–12 BC as a tomb for Gaius Cestius.

Tour description

Accompanied by an expert tour guide you will discover Rome's most significant artwork and architecture from the Industrial Revolution. Start your experience at the Centrale Montemartini, the new museum that houses part of the art collection of the Capitoline Museums. The transformation of this former thermoelectric power plant into a museum began in 1997 with the transfer of hundreds of statues from the basement of the Capitoline Museums. Today, the Centrale Montemartini is a stunning contemporary space, where ancient artworks merge with a futuristic installation. Follow your guide to the second stop on your journey, the Testaccio neighborhood. Historically, this was the neighborhood where Rome's first industrial factories were built, thus becoming the industrial center of the city starting from the second half of the 19th century. During a pleasant walk, you will have the chance to admire amazing historical buildings such as the Gazometro and the Macro Future, the museum of contemporary art, as well as another example of transformation and reuse of neoclassical premises.
