Roman Houses on the Celio Hill

The Celio hill was a notable wealthy residential district during the Republican-era and Imperial Rome alike. The hill, one of 7 within Rome, is where the greatest soldier of Julius Caesar lived, and the site where the expensive material of Marble was first found within a house in the age of Rome. Lavish villas complete with murals and mosaics have since been found. It has even been said that the great Emperor Marcus Aurelius was born on the Caelian Hill in 121.
San Clemente Basilica

This small Basilica of Rome located behind the Colosseum uniquely has 2 underground levels, the lowest dating back to the Republican era of 509-27BC and the middle level is believed to be from 392. The Basilica dedicated to Pope Clement first is a real history filled gem of modern day Rome.

Tour description

Enjoy an incredible adventure and discover the secret spots hidden underneath Rome. Explore Roman Houses on the Celio Hill and admire their beautiful frescoes while learning what life was like 2,000 years ago in one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in Rome. The Case Romane have been recently restored and re-opened to the public, along with a room displaying archaeological findings. Marvel at decorative wall-paintings from 5 separate houses, discovered during excavations in the late 19th century.

Continue with the Basilica of San Clemente, an early Christian basilica not far from the Colosseum and dedicated to Pope St. Clement. Walk down through different layers of time where you will discover well-preserved mosaics, frescoes and even a buried temple dedicated to God Mitra.

The locations visited during this tour are not accessible to wheelchair users
Appropriate clothing is highly recommended. Please be aware that the access to holy sites requires a strict dress code. The Basilica of San Clemente is part of the itinerary. Shoulders and knees have to be properly covered.

Baths of Caracalla

One of the few places you can still see an ancient structure’s full height – you’ll be transported to the 3rd century as you walk among this vast bath complex. You'll see where slaves loaded ancient furnaces to heat the water for the different pools of this amazingly still intact spa. You'll see mosaics that still decorate the pool floors, and even a game board used by bath visitors to pass the time while they soaked in the warm water. An extra fee will apply if transportation is requested. ** Please note admission tickets are not included and will be purchased on site.

Baths of Diocletian

The Baths of Diocletian are one of the four sites of the National Roman Museum. The magnificent structure of the bath, the largest in Ancient Rome, was built between the years 298 and 306 A.D. As well as holding the traditional pools of water at various temperatures (calidarium, frigidarium and tepidarium), the bath also included a central hall, an open-air swimming pool and many other rooms which were put to various uses. Today, the bath is taken up mainly by the Museum of Epigraphy which collects and conserves written texts on various themes from the eighth century B.C. to the fourth century A.D.

Capitoline Museums

Visit the Capitoline Museums, the first public museum in the world. It houses a collection of art and archaeological museums in Piazza del Campidoglio, on top of the Capitoline Hill in Rome, Italy. Pope Sixtus IV was responsible for the creation of the Musei Capitolini's nucleus when in 1471 with the help of Michelangelo in 1536 and executed over a period of more than 400 years. The museums' collection has grown to include a large number of ancient Roman statues, inscriptions, and other artifacts; a collection of medieval and Renaissance art; and collections of jewels, coins, and other items.

Carcere Mamertino

Carcere Mamertino is the most ancient prison in Rome, where the Apostles St. Paul and St. Peter were imprisoned for 9 months and where, according to legend, they miraculously made water appear to baptize the guardians.

Catacombs of Domitilla

The quiet tunnels will come to life as your guide tells you the stories and legends of early Christianity during the days of Roman persecution. The catacombs were the underground burial places of the early Christian and Jewish communities. You will discover the secrets of Christianity's earliest proponents who helped Christianity survive during the persecution from Rome's pagan emperors.

Capuchin's Bone Crypt

The Capuchin Crypt is a small space comprised of several tiny chapels located beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini on Via Veneto near Piazza Barberini. You'll be amazed by the strangely decorated Capuchin Chapel - which displays the bones of over 4,000 Capuchin monks! The Capuchin order insists that the display is not meant to be creepy, but instead, a silent reminder of the swift passage of life on Earth and our own mortality.
