The Port of Palermo is very ancient with a history reaching back almost three thousand years. Archaeological evidence in the form of cave drawings suggests that humans have lived in the Port of Palermo area since about 8000 BC. Phoenician traders founded the Port of Palermo in the 8th Century BC. Greek culture dominated the island for some time, and they called the village Panormus, meaning “all-port,” due to its excellent natural harbor.
-
This religious building was built by the Normans who originally came from Scandinavia and occupied the island between the eleventh and the thirteenth centuries. They incorporated Islamic traditions combined with architectural elements adopted from the Eastern Roman Empire, known as Byzantine; from this union a singular style known as Norman-Arab architecture.
Tour description
Make your Mediterranean sea cruise vacation unforgettable by visiting the pearls of the Sicilian coast: Palermo and Cefalù, famous for their beautiful baroque architecture and for their characteristic local food markets.
Not to mention the finest and beautiful coastline right in front of these gems.
Starting from the port of Palermo, you'll be whisked away by your private driving guide to the Northern coastal town of Cefalu. You'll notice that the area is largely dominated by relaxing locals and holidaying Italians who come from all points of Italy to bath in the emerald waters. As you explore the small village with a notable stop at the unique two tower cathedral, you'll easily notice why the village is recognized as an Unesco world heritage site and a staple point in local life.
Upon your return to Palermo, home to numerous churches with quite particular but equally beautiful interiors, the city is often considered to be the food capital of Sicily as it is known to be the birthplace of the famous Sicilian deep fried rice ball snack, Arancino. The trait of great food also stuck not only due to it's larger than life food markets with great range of fresh produce that is on sale almost daily but also because of the local market owners and their typical friendly Italian character.
After experiencing the city as a local, you will have your short private return drive back to Palermo's port in time to board your cruise.
