Started at the end of 1937 and completed at the end of 1939, the Palazzo Uffici, designed by Gaetano Minnucci, was the first permanent structure to be completed in the vast plan for the Rome Universal Exhibition. Currently the headquarters of EUR S.p.A.
-
Often known as the Square Colosseum, this memorable building is located out of the city centre. E.U.R is the location and is mainly full of local people living and working so a great non touristy location. The area was made under the influence of Benito Mussolini during the 1940's. Nowadays, the Square Colosseum is home to a Fendi museum, meaning you can appreciate the expert architectural work while browsing high end Italian fashion.
-
Palazzo dei Congressi is a building located in the EUR district of Rome. The palazzo was designed by Adalberto Libera for the 1942 Universal Exposition. Construction started in 1938 but was cancelled due to World War II. It was completed in 1954. Due to its large size, the palazzo hosted the fencing and the fencing part of the modern pentathlon events for the 1960 Summer Olympics.
Tour description
Take a tour to discover the "new" Rome : a new side of the Eternal City characterized by a charming mix of rationalist architecture, museums and nature.
This experience through Contemporary Rome takes place in the EUR quarter. Built in 1935, based on a project envisioned by Mussolini, this new neighborhood was at first intended as a monumental outdoor space designed to house the World’s Fair of 1942. Today the EUR quarter is a green and modern area, full of parks and new buildings that follow the traditional features of Roman architecture. This is the reason why the map of the quarter resembles the one still visible today in the Roman Forums, the heart of the Ancient Rome.
Among the several buildings you will see during our pleasant stroll, we will focus on Palazzo della Civiltà, also known as the "Square Colosseum", Palazzo degli Uffici, and Palazzo dei Ricevimenti e dei Congressi.
End this tour of modern Rome with a stroll through the park built for the Olympic Games of 1960.
