One of the Castelli Romani towns, Ariccia is part of a wide and pleasant regional park. It was one of the oldest cities of ancient Latium, being a serious contender against Rome during the early days of the Roman Republic. Today it’s very well known for the beautiful palaces and Churches, excellent food delicacies and the forested landscapes which gave birth to the Latin-Roman cult of Diana.

Over the centuries Castel Gandolfo has been elected to be the summer residence of the Popes. It is set next to the peaceful lake Albano, that can indeed be seen from one of its balconies. The historical palace takes its origins from the Middle Ages, and its story echoes the history of the Holy Church and the Popes. The second floor houses the private studio and bedrooms used by the Popes up to present.

During the Middle Age noble families such as the Orsini and the Colonna chose the same setting to build their castles. Over the centuries some of them were destroyed, while others were transformed to host the Pope’s families.
Stop in the little town of Ariccia – famous for the so-called “Fraschetta” restaurant – and look at the Chigi Palace designed by Bernini for Pope Alexander VII.
Reach Castel Gandolfo, where the Pope’s summer residence stays and comprises about 55 hectares of which make up an amazing garden. End your outdoor day trip in the village of Frascati, the city of wines and villas , before heading back to the Eternal City.
