Located just 16 miles southeast of Naples, Pompeii is the most-visited archaeological site in the world due to its many and well-preserved ruins, left behind by a city buried in Vesuvius’s wake in the year 79 A.D. The ancient site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 and is an excellent repository of details on daily life during Antiquity. Pompeii’s surviving treasures that survived long enough to tell the city’s story are its main forum and public structures, such as the Capitolium, the Basilica, the public baths, the triangular forum, its two theatres and the Stabian Baths.

Often overlooked by Pompeii, the smaller town of Herculaneum was also an Ancient Roman town that was covered in ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in roughly 79 AD - Located slightly closer to the Volcano, Herculaneum's ash covered town carbonized and preserved materials much better than Pompeii. The carbonization preserved items like wooden roofs, doors and beds and many lavish possessions within the wealthier town of the two. There are roughly 400 people mummified by ash still remaining in these ruins.
