Sites you’ll visit

  • Santa Maria Maggiore
  • Piazza degli Zingari
  • Via Leonina
  • Via Urbana
  • One of only 4 Major Basilicas of Rome and the largest dedicated to Saint Mary was built between 422-432 under the instruction of Pope Celestine the first. The mesmerizing mosaics covering the triumphal arch and nave gave a model for future representations of the Virgin Mary.
  • One of the most charming squares in Monti is Piazza degli Zingari, literally the square of the Gypsies, which took its name from the caravans of gypsies that flocked to Rome starting from the 1600s and were concentrated in this area. This tiny, frozen-in-time square is one of the quietest parts of the quarter. If you need a quiet break away from the vibrant Piazza della Madonna dei Monti nearby, stop here for lunch or a glass of wine in one of the newly-opened cafés.
  • Via Leonina is part of the Rione Monti. The street took its name from a Pope called Leone ( it is not known which one exactly) and is interrupted in the middle by a staircase called Salita dei Borgia. In via Leonina there is a beautiful Marian shrine depicting the Virgin Mary. On Via Leonina is also one of the most famous and crowded Irish pubs in the capital, where groups of tourists and expats gather to watch sporting events.
  • Walking along Via Urbana means to walk above the history of Rome. You will breathe the atmosphere of both ancient and medieval Rome. There is also the remarkable Church of Santa Pudenziana with its V century AD mosaic along this street. Keep in mind how Via Urbana is in the heart of the Monti District, one of the most historical neighborhoods of Rome!
