We are indeed tour guides but first we are travelers. We understand there might be last minute unforeseen circumstances that might cause a change of plans. When we sat down to write our cancellation policy we decided to think to what Cancellation Policy we would like to have for ourselves for our trips.
Start your tour to discover Jewish Rome by admiring the breathtaking view of the Janiculum Hill. Marvel at the impressive Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, also known as il Fontanone, one of the most beautiful fountains in Rome, dating from the 17th century.

Just as ancient explorers, we descend the hill into the heart of Trastevere. Stroll through suggestive narrow alleys lined with historical workshops, bakeries and typical inns. Your tour guide will be your storyteller, and you will discover that Rome is not just about gladiators and Christian history- it's also a city inhabited by Jews and influenced by their traditions for over 2,000 years.

Cross the pedestrian bridge of Ponte Sisto, and reach the Jewish Ghetto, which is one of the most beautiful areas in the city, full of history and tradition, that has almost entirely remained untouched throughout the centuries. The 1904 Synagogue, the centerpiece of this area, is a magnificent structure with beautiful windows and decorative facade. Walk through narrow cobblestone streets and experience several layers of history, learn the history of the Jewish community, while you admire the ancient ruins that surround you.

If you would like to see another tour that visits the Jewish ghetto, but also some alternative places, check out Our Memories of World War 2 Private. Unless you'd prefer  to see some really unique and off the beaten path locations on Our 20th century Rome Private tour.

I took Eyes of Rome's 'Jewish Rome' tour, and was so pleased with it and our guide that after the tour, we invited her to join us for lunch at 'Nonna Betta' (her recommendation) for some Jewish-Roman cuisine! The tour was fantastic- we learned all about the Jewish neighborhood, its history, and even the various Synagogues that Rome hosted through the centuries. By the end of the tour we had worked up a bit of an appetite, and thankfully there were a number of typical Jewish restaurants nearby- our guide recommended Nonna Betta because of its quality, selection, and prices. We were not disappointed!

  • Most people identify Italy as a Catholic country, and this is obviously true. However, Rome, also claims to be the oldest Jewish community center in Europe. According to tradition, the first Jews likely arrived in the city as messengers sent by Judah Maccabee in the second century B.C. The history of the Jews in Italy spans more than two thousand years and persisted throughout the centuries when Christianity established itself, despite periods of extreme persecution and expulsions. We can say that, possibly, no single historical period has been more defining to Rome’s Jewish community than the 315 years–from 1555 to 1870–that it spent inside the Ghetto.

The Jewish neighborhood today is dramatically different from those times: the amount of sky and light you have between the buildings now is huge when compared to the narrow streets of the Ghetto times. Tourists have also helped breathe new life in the area. Being the Ghetto one of Rome’s lesser-known gems, and, because of its long history, one of the most authentically Roman places to visit, we highly recommend including this itinerary in your to-do list while in Rome. It will provide a complete overview of the multi-faced history of the city and narrate the soulful stories of those who encouraged the formation of tight community bonds and allowed peculiar culture and customs to develop and flourish.

  • Here I am again! I am stepping into this conversation just to remind that we'll be soon celebrating the Shoah Remembrance day, on January 27th. During our Jewish Rome Tour we'll be visiting the area where the very first Jewish community in Rome, the firs in Europe, settled in the II Century B.C. Established as a ghetto in 1555 until 1870, it became the scene of a tragic Nazi raid on October 16th, 1943.

The deportation of 1259 Jewish people, 1053 of them being sent to Auschwitz concentration camp, led to the survival of only 16 of them at the end of World War II. We are honored to celebrate the memory of those men and women who took part to this controversial, sad and infamous moment in time, the Nazi occupation of Rome (September 1943 - June 1944), as well as the one of all the Roman citizens who helped out the Jewish community by trying to avoid the deportation.
