If you are taking a cruise to Italy and want to get the most out of your short time on land, the One Day in Rome tour is right for you. On this tour you will have a private driver for the whole day who will pick you up from the sea port and wait for you at every visiting location as you see the sights of Rome. You can either explore the sights on your own, or, to get the most out of your visit, you can book an official Eyes of Rome tour guide for the whole day, half day, or for just specific visits. Your tour guide will ensure that you see the most important highlights of the city and take you inside each location.
We will begin the tour with the massive Colosseum and the Roman Imperial Forum. In the Colosseum, an enormous amphitheater, you will see the multi-layered structure where Roman spectators of the old empire watched gladiator games, battles with wild beasts, and, as legend has it naumachiae - sea battles - once took place. At the Forum your tour guide will fill you in on the history of the structures there, where the estates of many of the emperors were located. You will see the Lapis Niger, the oldest Latin text in the world housed in a column of the Forum.
We will then proceed to the Pantheon, the most ancient building from the Roman Empire still standing intact. This magnificent edifice is considered one of the most phenomenal works of architecture in the world: the temple "Dedicated to all Divinities."
Visit the most famous fountain in the world - the Trevi Foutnain - on your day trip to Rome. Take some souvenir photos in front of this enormous fountain, your tour guide will be happy to take photos of you. Be sure to throw a coin in the fountain and wish to return to Rome!
Your guide will then take you to Circus Maximus, which was once the largest hippodrome in the world. Peer through the secret Aventine Keyhole, where you will see the most important thing in the city of Rome on the other side.
You will then proceed to the Vatican Museum where you will see the highlights of the over 1,200 galleries. Here you will behold up close the statues of Laocoon and Apollo Belvedere, and the Raphael Rooms which contain the famous fresco School of Athens - Raphael's masterpiece. At the end of the Vatican Museum you will enter the Sistine Chapel and witness in person Michelangelo's Last Judgment and the glorious Bibical scenes depicted on the Chapel ceiling. Your guide will point out some of the newly discovered Jewish symbolism within the art as well as the hidden anatomical shapes found within the frescos.
Your day tour in Rome will conclude with a visit to St. Peter's Basilica, in which you will see Michelangelo's Pieta` and the tomb of Pope John Paul II. Outside in the Square your tour guide can take photos of you in front of the Basilica and Bernini's beautiful fountain in the center of the square. The One Day in Rome tour provides you with the most thorough and complete tour of the city possible in one day. At the end of the tour, your driver will take you back to your cruise ship for the night.
